The National Assembly of Pakistan has added yet another glorious chapter to its journey as the world’s first Green Parliament, as the Hon’ble Speaker, National Assembly of Pakistan, received the inaugural Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Green Mace Award during the 69th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference held in Cape Town, South Africa. This prestigious recognition, conferred upon the CPA Pakistan Branch, acknowledges the Parliament’s exemplary commitment to environmental sustainability and responsible parliamentary practices.
It is a matter of profound significance that the Hon’ble Speaker has been at the helm of this transformative journey from its very inception. It was under his visionary leadership in 2016 that the Parliament House building was fully solarized, becoming the first legislature in the world to run entirely on renewable energy—a landmark achievement that earned Pakistan the distinction of being home to the world’s first Green Parliament. Today, it is again under his stewardship that the National Assembly of Pakistan has been selected among the very first cohort of Commonwealth Parliaments to receive the Green Mace Award.
Equally noteworthy is the Parliament’s progressive transition toward a paperless working environment. Through systematic automation and digitization of legislative and administrative processes, the National Assembly has substantially reduced its paper consumption and waste. This initiative has not only advanced the Parliament’s environmental objectives but has also enhanced efficiency, transparency, and accessibility within its working systems, setting a benchmark for modern, sustainable legislative governance. Alongside this milestone, a comprehensive rainwater harvesting system was also installed within the Parliament premises, enabling the capture and productive utilization of rainwater for conservation purposes—a further testament to the Parliament’s holistic approach to environmental stewardship.
